There are many things that are important to catalog design. Your images must be sharp and appealing. Your text and even the font you use for the text is important. The cover page design and the design of your catalog’s product pages all play important roles in designing a catalog that will bring in new customers and sales.
However none of the things mentioned above are more important than the type of paper you will choose to print your catalog on. The “feel” of your catalog is important to your potential customers. The longer they have your catalog in their hands, the more product they will buy. In this article I will go over some of the many paper choices you have to print your catalog on.
First you need to decide if the cover will be the same paper as the rest of your catalog. In most cases the cover will be of heavier weight then the interior pages.
Second you will need to choose coated or uncoated paper for printing your catalog. Coated paper is for the glossier layouts and uncoated is more economical, but can still display your products well.
So you have two things to consider first, “Will it be glossy paper or not?”, “Will my cover be the same weight as the interior pages of my catalog?”
Once you have answered those two questions the next decision is what the weight of the paper will be. Most catalogs go with 60, 70, or 80 lb. weights. So it would be 60lb uncoated or coated, 70 lb. Coated or uncoated. 80 lb. Paper usually is only chosen for 80 lb. Weight and above. Also, not all paper is measured by weight. Some is measured by thickness or “points”.
Now the above is really over-simplified. There are other types of special paper you can choose from. There is textured paper, photographic paper, and other more expensive paper to choose from if you are selling a high-end or expensive product.
There are also other considerations when choosing the paper your catalog will be printed on. Such as the method of printing you are going to choose.
If you are going to have your catalog printed on a hot-set web press, then you can choose uncoated or coated paper. The heat will dry the ink as it prints your catalog. If your printer uses a cold-set web press then the ink air-dries and is absorbed into the paper. A cold-set web press cannot print on coated paper.
If your printer uses a sheet-fed press then you can choose from any of the high quality papers they have available. The same goes for printers that do digital printing.
It will depend a lot on the printer you choose. You need to find out what type of paper is available and you will want to see samples of the paper to get a better idea of which one you want to print your catalog on. Also ask your printer to suggest the different types of paper they think will be the best for your catalog.
Here is a list of some of the types of paper your printer may have available for you to choose from or may be able to order for you.
Dull Coated Paper
Matte Coated Paper
Glossy Coated Paper
Antique Paper
Vellum Paper
Wove Paper
Smooth Paper
Felt Paper
Linen Paper
Fiber-added Paper
Laid Paper
Parchment
Four things determine the quality of the paper, opacity, brightness, finish, and ppi. (Pounds per inch) Brightness affects the contrast and brilliance of the paper. It affects how your text will stand out on the pages of your catalog. Opacity is how much your ink is visible from the back of the page. If a paper is too opaque, your text and images from one page will be seen through onto another page that your customer is trying to read. The finish affects the feel of the pages and also how your images will look. The lower grade finishes produce grainier images while high quality finishes sharpen the look of your images.
Ask your printer to provide you with samples or swatch booklets and a price list for printing your catalog on the various types of paper before you decide. You know what your budget is and paper is only one of the expenses you have to consider.

Think you can’t change the world? Think again. Considering your everyday routines, there are steps you can take using environmental products to conserve resources. From home use products to the business office, there are many “green” product options that perform just as well or better than the more wasteful alternatives. It is as simple as being mindful of the availability of environmental products, and using them on a daily basis with your regular routine.

Start a morning at home with responsible choices for personal care products, including shampoos, conditioners, lotions and soaps, which are organic and contain no petroleum derivatives or chemicals. Even the fabrics you choose for clothing and towels can be environmentally sound, including organic products and 100% chemically untreated cotton. Look for household paper products like tissues, paper towels, toilet tissue and napkins made with 100% recycled fibers and post consumer waste, and also which are processed chlorine free.

These everyday choices make a difference for a more sustainable earth. Many household cleaners are highly toxic and non-biodegradable. Choose all natural ingredient products for cleaning your home, and check to see if the packaging is recyclable. Non-toxic and cruelty-free products are readily available and are very effective cleaners. Plastic trash bags for use at home or in the office are now available in recycled plastic as well as vegetable-based, compostable “plastics.”

How about the use of environmental products in the office? There are many responsible choices for office supplies. Considering the huge volume of paper used by the average office, it is critical to make educated choices when purchasing recycled paper. When buying office paper; including copier paper, envelopes, file folders, etc., look for 100% post consumer waste (PCW) and chlorine free processing. Some papers are labeled recycled or recyclable but only use a small percentage of truly recycled, post-consumer content paper. Additional environmentally responsible office supplies available include pens, pencils, remanufactured toner cartridges, and much more.

The choices are abundant for products that can be used everyday in a home, school or office. And, they are easily accessible at a reasonable cost. The choices that we make with our purchasing dollars can have a profound impact on the future for our earth.

Stationary is a term which was originally used to describe all products including fine stationary and custom invitations which were sold by a stationer and as the name suggests, was initially a book shop in a fixed location usually near a university. The life cycle of stationary has changed enormously over the past hundreds of years and no more so than during the last 30 years with the advent of electronic media.
Despite the onset of many types of electronic media, there is still a stationary cupboard to be found in virtually every office. Varieties and usage of stationary is becoming more and more elaborate with new products being developed all the time to keep up with market demand.
Office stationary comes under many different guises and its shape and form is subject to the type of office environment. There are however many office items which are found in virtually every business corner.
Files
Files are found in every office and indeed in most households. Their usage varies and the filing systems range from very plain paper wallets to sophisticated lever arch files. Some of the main file types used are portfolio files, clip files and suspension files. These systems naturally vary greatly in price, quality and colour, and although electronic media stores a vast amount of previously filed documents, there is still a requirement for a paper storage system, for example in doctor’s surgeries and colleges.
Paper
Despite the fact that we live in a technology advanced society, there is still no such thing as a perfectly paperless office and paper which we use nowadays is becoming more and more sophisticated.
Business Cards
Whereas previously, paper would have been restricted to one or two sizes and thicknesses, today there is a vast range of paper textures and weights, colours and printing processes to choose from and business stationary in particular has reached a very high standard of excellence. Business cards are becoming more sophisticated and whose origin dates from usage within the 19th century American and European middle classes. Some of the paper types used are copier paper, inkjet paper, multifunctional paper, photo paper and labels.
Pens
On top of every desk you would be hard pushed to ignore normally a plentiful supply of writing instruments. Pens, pencils and markers, including permanent, non permanent and specialist markers are becoming increasingly elaborate including premium pens, the original fountain pens, roller balls, fibre tips and ball point pens. Highlighter pens are large water based fibre tip pens in fluorescent colours which are perfect for page marking as it leaves the text underneath visible.
Office adhesives
There are certainly some items which are necessary to ensure the smooth running of an office. These goods may include such things as staplers, punches, post-its, scissors and white liquid paper.
When you purchase staplers and punches, you usually purchase an associated range of refill packs of staples. An office also has many items such as stick and liquid glues, adhesive spray, blu and white tack
Calendars and time management
The effective organisation of time and ideas forms the heart of any office or organization. A plethora of products on the market place ensures that effective business planning and event organization becomes easier, there is less room for error and that the logistics of planning events and appointments becomes more of a pleasure and less time consuming.
Desk calendars
The great majority of people in any form of economic activity manage their daily schedules and long term events via integrated mobile phone devices and computer organisers. There is however, always a requirement for wall and desk based diaries and calendars. These aids range from highly sophisticated and expensive leather bound desk diaries and electronic desk calendars to the smaller and cheaper paper pocket diaries.

If you are currently considering purchasing a wide format printer there are probably the obvious reasons as to why you want to make this investment, however you may still be on the fence about this decision because of the initial high costs. The following may help you think outside the box a little and give you additional ideas about why it might be useful to have a wide format printer in your office.

First, wide format printers are perfect for making large scale event displays. If your company ever participates in any type of trade show or convention where you have to set up a visual booth for patrons to look at, having a large colorful visual display can be a great way to generate attention. Using a wide format printer would enable you to easily customize each event display for any specific location or theme. Second, wide format printers are great for producing one-of-a-kind banners. If your firm has any type of store front where potential customers or clients might visit, hanging a banner informing the public about the functions of your company or any special promotions you have going on can be a great way to create traffic to your business. If you don’t have a store front, hanging banners inside the office pertaining to any employee activities or special events may be a great way to boost employee moral. Additionally, if your business does have a store front, wide format printers can also be used to help make any point-of-purchase displays or any retail window displays. Point-of-purchase displays are important to any retail business offering any promotional specials or deals and to drive sales. Retail window displays can take many forms, posters or banners can be options, but backlit displays are unique and are sure to get your window recognition. With all of the different types of paper material available for wide format printers to use, there are a variety of different creative methods that can be applied to any sign or poster. Wide format printers can help to make business presentations or pitches look more professional or client tailored. Large visuals can help gain client attention, and having the ability to tailor the message to the specific client on the visual is great way to impress any potential or current client. Furthermore, if there are any visuals or photos that you would like to include in your presentation but seem too small to have an effect, wide format printers can be used to help print enlargements of all of these images and get them noticed by the client. Enlarging other visuals, such as potential print ads to be placed in magazines or news papers, can help tremendously in proofing. Because wide format printers can enlarge almost any image, they can help to proof images, ads, etc. that are up for review. Viewing such material in a large format can help draw any attention to minor flaws that may have been missed under any other editing circumstances. There are many types of paper rolls out there to help you achieve each and every one of these possible functions. HP Bright White Paper HP C1861A is HP’s brightest, low cost bond paper for everyday black and color line drawings. There is also paper that can handle high density ink coverage for posters and signs that need to be laminated or mounted and must dry quickly; a good paper for this usage is HP Universal Heavyweight Coated Paper HP Q1414A HP Q1405A. No matter what the brand, you will find paper that yields your printing goals.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is one of those big events that tech and gadget geeks from all over the world look forward to every year to get a glimpse of the new gizmos they could salivate on and hopefully get a hold of before the year ends. In the last CES, one of the many gadgets that certainly wowed cellphone and photo geeks is an as-yet nameless product that we shall call the Zink printer.

What is the Zink printer? The Zink printer is one of the newest offerings of Polaroid, that camera products company that we are all familiar with, and of Zink, or Zero Ink Printer Company. The Zink printer promises to become a craze by the time it is released before fall. Why? First, because it is a portable cellphone printer that can easily fit in your pocket. Second, it is an inkless printer – with the Zink technology, it does not consume even a drop of ink.

How Does the Zink Printer Work?

Yes, the Zink printer does not use even a drop of ink. That is because this inkless printer makes use of special paper that was developed by Zink. This special Zink paper has numerous tiny crystals colored in yellow, magenta and cyan, the basic colors needed by inkjet printers to produce color prints.

The way the Zink printer works to produce color prints is quite simple. When a photo is printed using this inkless printer, the Zink printer’s head applies the appropriate heat and pressure on the Zink paper, as accorded by the image being printed. This heat and pressure causes the yellow, magenta and cyan crystals on the Zink paper to melt and blend together to capture the desired image on the paper.

Are photos printed with the Zink printer durable? The answer is yes. The Zink paper is designed so that any image printed on it will be highly resistant to light and heat, therefore more durable and more long-lasting that even Polaroid prints. The Zink paper’s polymer overcoat is the one that makes this possible.

Using the Zink Printer as a Cellphone Printer

What makes the Zink printer so great is that it can be used as a cellphone printer. Any image you can capture on your cellphone camera or digital camera, you can now easily print on the Zink printer.

As mentioned above, the Zink printer is so small it can fit easily into your pocket. Having a portable cellphone printer such as the Zink printer will make it a joy for photo geeks to exchange snapshots. What is more is that the Zink paper can come in variants with adhesive backing, which would make for lovely and colorful customized stickers and labels. A pack containing 10 sheets of the Zink paper is said to cost only $4.

The Zink printer promises to be a hit when it gets released this fall. As a cellphone printer, it is poised to add another dimension of fun and convenience to taking pictures with a cellphone. As an inkless printer, it is a more affordable and handier way of getting the prints that you want.

Simply defined paper rolls are rolled paper of particular type finding many uses including for thermal printers. Paper rolls come in many forms and types each designed for specific use. Major use of paper rolls and products is in office, restaurants and other businesses. Business establishments, retail merchants, restaurants, other businesses generally use credit card processing software, POS system and label generator machine. This establishment use thermal paper rolls for thermal printers. These rolls are easy to use on thermal printers and the output is of much higher quality as compared to dot matrix printers. The thermal paper is also used in ATM machines and other applications to prints receipts and forms. Thermal paper rolls are also used to create bar codes and quality labels for merchandise. Another use is for printing high-resolution images, logos and graphics. Unlike standard paper thermal rolls designed for specific use generate better quality results. Thermal paper is coated with chemical which on exposure change color.

Some of the best fund raising ideas for schools are those which involve the pupils in some kind of creative activity. I’ll bet if you asked most young children what they enjoy most at school the answers would include drawing or painting. Combining the talents of our children with parents and grandparents willingness to spend money is a winning combination.
And how do you get all that creativity on to something that displays our children’s artistic skills to as wide an audience as possible? You print it on gift wrapping paper. Possibilities for themes are endless, but parent’s pockets aren’t, so selling the gift wrap at a couple of events a year should be just right. The most obvious are the Summer Fete or Fair and at Christmas.
Get the children to create their works of art on A4 paper sheets. They can be on white paper, or for an interesting effect spread a few different coloured papers among the pupils. A standard sheet of Gift Wrap is 500mm x 700mm or similar. When the children’s illustrations are reduced down in size, you can fit any number from about 72 up to 288 images on to a sheet. It depends on the effect you want to achieve. The white background tends to work better with the lower numbers and the multi-coloured papers with higher numbers. Duplicate images as desired or necessary to make up the numbers.
The children’s images are scanned and montaged using design software and printing should be carried out by a printing company. How much of the work of creating the gift wrap is carried out by the school will depend on the school’s own capabilities. However, it is recommended that the assembly of images and final printing is carried out by professionals. The minimum quantity for printing gift wrap of this kind is 1000 sheets. The profit on this amount should be at least 100% after printing costs are taken out. For larger quantities, the amount raised by the school would be even higher.
At Christmas time, an additional fund raiser is to have greetings cards printed with images from the gift wrap. The advantage with these fund raising projects is that they can be repeated annually with different sets of children taking part. As well as the money raised, the expressions on the children’s faces when they see their work in print is priceless.

Everyday choices for an office can make a huge difference in the future of global health, as well as economic and social benefits.  This energy guide suggests a number of energy saving opportunities that can make a difference.  Choices of lighting, office equipment, paper products, heating and cooling systems, water conservation, and cars and parking can all reduce global warming pollution, and reduce costs.Lighting uses about 29% of the total energy use in an office.  By changing fluorescent lighting from T-12 to T-8 or T-5 size lamps, using dimmable ballasts, and changing to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) can save thousands of energy dollars in an office building.  Changing exit signs and exterior lighting to CFLs will also cut energy usage and costs.  Occupancy sensors can also be used to automatically turn lights off when nobody is in a room.Considering computers, printers, copiers, and faxes, office equipment is enormous energy expenditure.  If workstations would be shut down at night, and automatically set to go into “sleep” mode during daytime idle periods, it could save millions of tons of CO2 emissions!  Additionally, look for Energy Star labels when replacing copiers, faxes, and other office equipment.  Energy Star copiers use less energy with automatic turn off functions, and some are capable of making double sided copies to use less paper.Offices literally use tons and tons of paper, and there are effortless ways to use much less; for example relying on electronic copies instead of printing, single spacing what is printed, and simply using both sides of a piece of paper.  Purchasing recycled paper is an obvious standard, but look for labels that say the paper is made from at least 30% “Post Consumer Waste” (100% PCW is available and preferable), and is non-chlorine bleached.  Using recycling paper saves significant energy, water, air emissions, and landfill space.  Colored paper, magazines, newsprint, and boxes can be recycled in addition to standard white paper.  A business should always encourage and support the recycling of all eligible products like glass, aluminum and plastics as well as paper. There are many options for green office supplies which are excellent choices for an environmentally responsible office.  Products should be chosen that are recycled, tree-free, biodegradable, non-toxic, sustainable, or reusable.  Paper products, pens and pencils, planners, filing products, ink cartridges, and more, all should be used.  Responsible choices can be made when purchasing other products in an office including cups and food containers, trash bags, and cleaning supplies. There are so many things an office can do to reduce their HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) usage, which can be up to 40% of energy use in a business.  Choose the most efficient HVAC products when purchasing a system, but they will not likely be the least expensive; however, the reduced utility bills will quickly make up for it.  For optimal system performance, these systems need to be properly maintained and operated.   Operationally, automatic thermostats can be installed to turn the systems on and off when needed, eliminating wasteful use. There are creative options for high efficiency cooling and heating including outside air economizers.  These use the cool outside air to flush the building with fresh air.  This allows less air conditioning use during the day, and these systems pay for themselves in 3-5 years.  Another method to avoid the intense heat of the sun is solar shading opportunities.  They include reflective roof coatings, which use white roof coverage that reflects the sun’s heat back into the atmosphere.  Window films and shading are also used to shield a building from the sun’s heat.  Another inventive option is to have trees and shrubs planted on the south and west side of a building to provide natural shade.  Eco-roofs actually use vegetation as the roof surface.  This does not allow as much heat absorption through the roof, and it also has drainage advantages.Water conservation and water heating methods are important elements of having a green office.  For hot water heaters, set the temperature at 120 degrees, and consider a smaller or even a tankless unit.  Solar pre-heating units are now available, which can save 50% off of hot water bills, and also allows for state tax credits.  As far as plumbing, install low flush toilets and low flow faucets, and always fix leaks.  Thousands of gallons of water can be wasted from leaks that are simple to repair.A significant saving of gasoline and a reduction of greenhouse emissions can result from employers who support the reduction of drive time for employees.  Employers can subsidize transit, and encourage carpooling with incentives.  Employers can support bicycle commuting with secure bike parking and access to locker rooms and showers.  Offering flexible work schedules including telecommuting and compressed work weeks reduces commute time, and increases worker productivity.  If a company has car fleets, choosing hybrid cars, and using recycled motor oil and antifreeze are environmentally friendly options. In order to implement some of the above, or research alternative products, some businesses hire a conservation manager.  They can track energy use, encourage employee participation in green causes, and facilitate the use of green office supplies.  Implementing any of these suggestions can be an important step toward improving the health of our world, and GreenLine Paper supports these causes as well as supplying socially responsible office products.
